Codecademy.

Codecademy has developed by leaps and bounds since I used it in 2012. Some fabulous new features incorporate the API and Web Project sections, which support  the content and add some practical functionality to the education. This is probably the biggest improvement since 2012, as many of the previous courses were largely inapplicable to real life situations.

What is it?

Despite the relative lack of difficult and real world content, Codecademy remains the dominant free site for you to get familiarised with code and coding concepts, and is an exceptional starting point for anyone looking to nail down the basics. As long as you go in with the comprehension that the site is just a stepping stone on a long path, you’ll likely derive great value from the concepts and techniques offered here.

Courses Available

Currently, Codecademy offers courses in seven main areas:

While the individual courses are lightweight and introductory (ranging from 3 to 13 hours in content), they shine at teaching the most important coding concepts and techniques. This will give you the building blocks to develop your skills over time by proposing concepts such as control flow, classes, loops, arrays, strings, objects, methods, and more. These are theories throughout almost all object-oriented programming (OOP) languages, so you’ll benefit from a conceptual standpoint regardless of which language you start off with or pursue in the future.

How do I use it.

Pupils self-manage their learning and progress at their own pace and I manage from the teacher’s console. They use it for 20 minutes in a 45-minute lesson to progress their computational understanding and learn basic Python
